The importance of land and water resources in Bangladesh is immense. Land is the basic natural resource that is the main source of food, industrial products, consumer goods, health care materials, etc. But due to population growth, unplanned use of land, our vital resources are declining day by day. With the economic progress, the trend of urbanization is increasing, the scope of industrialization is gradually increasing, the amount of land per capita is shrinking due to the continuous expansion of roads, hospitals, educational institutions.

The use of vital resources depends largely on proper planning. There is a need to ensure proper use of natural resources and optimal use of limited land through proper planning and policy. In this regard, land use policy has already been formulated by the Ministry of Land. After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 through the great war of liberation under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a full-fledged ministry was formed to carry out all the work related to land. Currently, the Department of Land Records and Survey, Land Reform Board, Land Appeal Board, Land Administration Training Center and the Office of the Comptroller of Accounts are functioning under the Ministry of Land.

Commissioners at the divisional level, Collectors at the district level, Assistant Commissioners at the Upazila level, Union Land Assistant Officers at the Union level are engaged in performing the functions related to land. The Ministry of Land deals with land development tax and revenue collection, settlement of khas land management, watershed management, possession of land acquisition orders, land records, surveying and training of land related officers / employees. Reform activities like collection of land development tax through banks, enactment of land laws in the public interest etc. and land zoning activities of landless marginalized people, rehabilitation, khas land settlement among landless under char development and settlement project, modernization of upazila union land office construction and repair, land reclamation. Development work such as provision of land related services in the shortest possible time is carried out by the Ministry of Land.
