On November 1, 1994, the Board of Directors of Grameen Bank approved a proposal to establish a separate ‘not for profit’ company called Grameenphone. In 1995, Grameen Telecom was given Rs 30 crore through social advance fund. In 1998, Soros Economic Development borrowed millions of US dollars in the long run.
Note that this operator is the most popular in Bangladesh. And provides high quality services in remote areas of the country. At present, the number of Grameen Phone subscribers is around one crore.
