Border Guard Bangladesh was formed on 29 June 1895. At that time the name of the force was Ramgarh Local Battalion. The number of troops was 446. The Ramgarh Local Battalion was formed with six pounds of ammunition, four cannons and two irregular cavalry. Due to the growing problems in the border areas, these forces took part in the operations in the hilly areas. After the partition of India from British rule in 1947, the Eastern Frontiers Rifles were renamed the East Pakistan Rifles. It is abbreviated as EPR. A contingent of the Calcutta Metropolitan Armed Police and a thousand Bengalis and West Pakistanis joined the force. Army officers are recruited from the military in the EPR for efficient leadership and direction.
