The Department of Food is the only agency under the Ministry of Food. The present Department of Food established at that time as the Civil Supplies Department to deal with the Great Famine that arose in undivided Bengal during the Second World War. Although the permanent structure of the Food Department was provided in 1956, the Directorate of Administration, Procurement, Supply, Distribution and Rationing, Movement and Conservation, Inspection and Quality Control, Accounts and Finance, etc. continued to function separately. In 1974, as a result of administrative reform activities, 6 directorates merged and the reorganized Directorate General of Food established. The Director General serves as the Chief Executive of the Food Department. An Additional Director General provides overall support to the Director General in operational activities. There are 6 directors in 6 departments of the department for various activities of the director general. Officers and employees of different levels of the Food Department perform their respective duties assigned under the directors. The entire country divided into 6 regions in line with the administrative department of the country to carry out the overall activities of food management at the field level. The district food controllers are in charge of the districts under the regional food controllers in charge of the regions and divisions. There is one Upazila Food Controller in each Upazila. There are a total of 5 silos, 13 CSDs and 631 LSDs across the country.
