Abdur Rahim was born on January 19, 1915. After being orphaned at the age of seven, he raised by one of his great-uncles, who rented him his department store. Rahim started a small sewing and textile business in Calcutta, then started a small private business in the early 1940s. He got married in 19445 and two years later, after the partition of India, he moved his family to Chittagong in East Bengal. In 1950, he set up a small business with a capital of 200,000 Pakistani rupees (42,000 as of 1950). On April 15, 1954, he started a business called Rahimafroz & Co. after his eldest son Afroz Rahim. At first, it focused on retail sales of clothing.
