Border Guard Bangladesh was form on 29 June 1895. At that time the name of the force was Ramgarh Local Battalion. The number of troops was 447. The Ramgarh Local Battalion was form with six pounds of ammunition, four cannons and two irregular cavalry. Due to the escalation of problems in the border areas, the forces took part in the operation in the hilly areas. In 181, the Ramgarh Local Battalion was reorganize with 1,454 regular irregular police forces in the East and renamed the Frontier Guards. It was headquartere at Goalpara, Laxmipur, Chittagong, Kamrup, Sylhet and Tripura border outposts.
In 189, the then members of this force called the Special Company set up their first base at Peelkhana. The force was reorganize in 1891 and the Frontier Guards were rename the Bengal Military Police. The Bengal Military Police was divided into four companies. It lasted till 1919. In 1920, the Bengal Military Police Force was reorganized and renamed the Eastern Frontiers Rifles. The Eastern Frontiers Rifles were into 16 platoons and deployed to guard the border. The duration was till 1947.

After the partition of India from British rule in 1947, the Eastern Frontiers Rifles were rename East Pakistan Rifles. It is abbreviate as EPR. A contingent of the Calcutta Metropolitan Armed Police and a force of one thousand Bengalis and West Pakistanis joined the force. Army officers are recruit from the military in the EPR for efficient leadership and direction. After the independence of the country, on March 3, 1972, the EPR force was reorganize rename as Bangladesh Rifles. Since March 3, 1970, the government has given the national flag in recognition of the force. On 16 March 1997, a three-color combination of printed cloth uniforms was introduced for the BDR forces. The horrific 215-year chapter of the BDR came to a head with the horrific infernal massacre that took place at the Peelkhana headquarters in 2009. New laws were also introduced by changing the name of the force.
