Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited was established in 1987 in Rangadia, Anwara Upazila, Chittagong District, Bangladesh. It built by the Japanese Toyo Engineering Corporation. The plant has the capacity to produce 1700 tons of urea and 1000 tons of ammonia per day. On 31 January 2015, the Bangladesh government shut down the factory after the furnace and cooling tower were damaged. The contract for the repair work awarded to the Italian company AXO Welding. The factory reopened on July 7, 2017 after repairing Rs 400 million. Karnafuli Gas Distribution Company Limited supplies gas to the factory. Production suspended again on 22 December 2017 due to gas shortages and resumed on 13 September 2018, partly due to liquefied natural gas.

Like most state-owned fertilizer companies in Bangladesh, the factory closed in the summer to bring natural gas back to home customers. Due to the gas crisis, the plant could not produce at its best and lost up to Rs 100 million a month. Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation can produce 1.9 million metric tons of fertilizer against the demand of 2.5 million metric tons. The factory also blamed for the pollution of the Karnafuli river. In 2004, with the help of Pakistani intelligence, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party of Bangladesh tried to smuggle guns through the jetty of the government component, Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited. The case came known as the recovery of 10 trucks of arms and ammunition in Chittagong. The weapons intended for separatist groups in India.
