“শেরেবাংলা কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আইন 2001” 09 জুলাই 2001 তারিখে জাতীয় পরিষদে পাস হয়। 15 জুলাই 2001 তারিখে তৎকালীন মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের কার্যক্রম উদ্বোধন করেন। শাদাত উল্লাহর প্রথম ভাইস চ্যান্সেলর প্রফেসর ড. “শেরে বাংলা কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আইন 2001” এর প্রয়োজনীয়তা অনুসারে সরকার কর্তৃক জারি করা একটি প্রজ্ঞাপনের পর, 11 সেপ্টেম্বর 2001 তারিখে শের-ই-বাংলা কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় তার আনুষ্ঠানিক কার্যক্রম শুরু করে।
