Robi first started operations in 1997 under the brand name Actel under the name Telecom Malaysia International. In 2010, the company was rebrand to Robi and the company changed its name to Robi Axiata Limited. As of November 2018, Robi Axiata uses two brands ‘Robi’ and ‘Airtel’ for mobile services. As a product brand, Robi Axiata is doing business in Airtel Bangladesh’s market. Robi Axiata Limited Telecom Malaysia started as a joint venture company between AK Khan and the company. It was formerly known as Telecom Malaysia International Bangladesh Limited and start operations under the brand name ‘Actel’ Bangladesh in 1997. In 2008, AK Khan closed the business by selling a 30% stake in NTT DoCoMo in Japan for 350 million.
Re-launched as ‘Robi’ on March 26, 2010, it adopted the logo of parent company Axiata Group, which itself went through a major rebranding in 2009. After five years of presence in 2013, DoCoMo took over its ownership of Axiata from 6% to 9%. It was announc on 26 January 2017 that Robi Axiata and Airtel Bangladesh will merge between 2011. The connected network will be known as Robi and will serve a combin 40 million subscribers on both networks. Axiata will have a 6.3 per cent stake, while Bharati will have a 25 per cent stake. The remaining shares will be own by NTT Docomo. Robi and Airtel finally merged on 16 November 2017 and Robi carried it as a merged company.
